RUGBY LEAGUE stars from many an era helped celebrate the 80th birthday of Hilton Park stalwart Tommy Sale.

Leigh's first post-war captain has served the club in almost every capacity.

Away from Hilton Park he captained Widnes in the 1950 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Famous Leigh players from the past such as Mick Martyn, Jimmy Ledgard, Walt Tabern and Bill Robinson were joined by members of the 1950 Widnes side as he was the subject of a "This Is Your Life" feature.

Also on stage were members of Leigh's Division One and Lancashire Cup double-winning side of 1981-82 . . . Mick Stacey, Steve Donlan, Alf Wilkinson and John Woods.

Guest of honour was Alex Murphy, who led Leigh to that 1981-82 success and to their famous Challenge Cup Final win over Leeds in 1971.

Tommy, third left, is pictured with son Ronnie, daughters Jean and Fiona, wife Evelynne and Leigh RL chairman Mick Higgins.
