YOUTH may get its chance for Burnley tomorrow when Stan Ternent takes a glimpse into the future by blooding youngsters Carl Smith and Matthew Heywood.

The pair have been added to the Clarets' squad for their final pre-season work-out at Rochdale.

"They are in the squad to have a look at them and we might slip them on.

"They have done very well and while I wouldn't send kids on a man's errand if they are good enough they are old enough," confirmed Ternent.

Midfielder Smith and central defender Heywood played in a behind closed doors friendly against Bolton this week and it's no secret that the two play in areas where Ternent is looking to strengthen.

It would be a surprise if they were elevated to regular first-team duty at this stage as Ternent is still chasing new signings but it's another clear indication that the new Burnley boss is having a thorough look at his current personnel. "I think I have been fair with the players, given a fair crack of the whip and I have drawn some conclusions, albeit I would have liked a bit more time," said Ternent.

Andy Payton and Mark Robertson are still struggling with hamstring injuries and are unlikely to be involved at Spotland as Ternent continues to experiment and build up the players' fitness ahead of the curtain raiser in a week's time.

Burnley from: Parks, Moore, Morgan, Ford, Brass, Blatherwick, Howey, Little, Williams, Cooke, Henderson, Smith, Jepson, Winstanley, Carr-Lawton, Mawson, Smith, Heywood.

Rochdale from: Edwards, Sparrow, Stokes, Farrell, Monington, Johnson, Jones, Lancashire, Leonard, Painter, Peake, Stuart, Carden, Bailey, Barlow, Bayliss.

Paul Weller looks certain to have played his last game for the Clarets as he heads for West Ham next week with a view to a possible move to the Premiership club.

"He's going down to train with them or something. "Whether they think he's up to it I don't know but I wish him well," said Ternent who has planned without the midfield man who has rejected a new contract at Turf Moor.

Weller also has options in Holland but it would be in Burnley's interests for him to stay in this country in order to receive a fee for the 23-year-old.

"It might be looking ahead but if West Ham do decide to take him I would prefer to do a deal with Harry Redknapp. If it goes to a tribunal often neither side benefits," added Ternent.

Smith and Heywood were left out of a youthful Clarets side that earned a creditable 1-1 draw with Unibond League champions Barrow last night.

Barrow took the lead after 39 minutes when last year's leading scorer Neil Morton beat the Clarets' offside trap and rounded Craig Mawson to score. However, Burnley hit back and drew level 10 minutes into the second period when Brad Maylett kept his cool to fire past Farrelley after an excellent Phil Eastwood through-ball put the young striker through on goal.

Barrow then had the better of the chances to seal the win but Mawson made a number of fine saves to deny them a winner.

Burnley: Mawson, Scott, Devenney, Graham, West, Williamson, Woods, Maylett, Eastwood (Gardiner), Kevan, Gibson (Gregson).
