FUNNYMAN Jim Pickles had people rolling in the aisles when he took part in the national finals of a pensioners' talent contest.

The Accrington comedian fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he brought tears to the eyes of an audience of 1,800 at Southport Theatre.

Former postman Jim's "everything happens to me" routine included six minutes of stand-up jokes and was rounded off with a song, Alma Cogan's "Last Night on the Back Porch".

Jim, 83, of Emma Street, won through to the Whitbread Senior Citizens Talent Contest in a regional competition held at Morecambe in June.

He was hopeful of winning the £1,000 first prize, but despite missing out on the top three he has promised to keep people laughing.

"I was really happy with my performance," said Jim, who wore a white suit and rainbow tie.

"There were 14 other people taking part and the standard was really high. "I wasn't nervous. It's a bit like going to the dentist - something you have to do and then it's over and done with.

"Six minutes isn't very long.

"It takes five to get the audience warmed up and then you have to get off!"

Jim was clapped and cheered by a coachload of family and friends who travelled from Hyndburn to the coast to see his act.

His two-year-old great-granddaughter Kloe, wife Sadie, son Paul and grandson Carl were all at the theatre to give him a big hand.

"The people were lovely," added Jim. "The audience was mostly pensioners and a few children and I think everyone enjoyed it.

"Being on the stage is something I wanted to do as a boy and now I'm retired I've got the chance.

"I'll carry on telling jokes as long as I can."
