THE full cost of a blaze which badly damaged a Pendle community centre earlier this month has been revealed.

Councillors have been told that it would cost £75,000 to replace Walverden Community Centre, Brunswick Street, Nelson, which was severely damaged on July 3.

The repair bill would be £45,000, a report to Pendle Council's Nelson area committee, said.

And pulling down the damaged structure and turfing over the site would cost £3,900.

The fire, which is still being investigated by the police and fire brigade, also caused £4,500 worth of damage to equipment inside the centre.

The blaze has left the building - which was used as a polling station - unusable and another venue will have to be found before local elections next May.

The future of the building will be decided by the council's resource management committee.
