SPEEDING motorists in the Harle Syke area of Burnley will be slowed by traffic calming measures.

Coun Margaret Lishman told Burnley planners some motorists had been recorded travelling at 60mph in the 30mph zone. She said: "When Harle Syke was built it was in the days of horses and carts not motor cars. Now cars are a problem all over the ward,

"The accident figures for the area are only the ones where police have been called. As a resident I know there are numerous bumps not reported."

A 220-name petition was presented to Burnley's development control and highways sub-committee.

Councillors recommended speed checks on Burnley Road, a small traffic calming scheme neat Briercliffe Business Centre, obtaining accident statistics and reviewing traffic regulation orders.

A long-term solution will be developed between engineers and Lancashire County Council.
