THERE must be many people who agree with the trade union members of Blackburn College objecting to the bombing of Iraq (Letters, December 23).

The news propaganda referred to 'military targets,' but I am old enough to remember the 'targets' of 1940 - the civilians of Britain, Germany and Russia.

The sanctions blockade of Iraq has brought death and misery to babies and the aged sick. It has stopped them getting medicine and baby food, none of which Saddam Hussein consumes.

I am angry at the attitude of my fellow Christians who can celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace and at the same time condone military attacks upon a city and condone it by their very silence.

The Quakers are the only 'church' which has for 300 years maintained its Christian peace testimony against all wars.

In 1953, Winston Churchill said: "If they tell you to go to war again, you tell them to go and fight themselves."

This vindicates those who oppose arms in following Christ's teachings and humanity, even before Establishment priorities.
