THE area around Gisburn war memorial has been smartened up by Ribble Valley Council.
The council rebuilt the stone wall and replaced the railings behind the memorial after requests from the villagers for improvements to the area.
The council worked with the Gisburn 2001 committee and a private contractor on the project.
The scheme has been entered for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards, which reward all kinds of initiatives which make East Lancashire a nicer place to live.
Judging takes place on January 20 and winners will be announced in March.
