FIRMS in the region are being urged to make a New Year's Resolution to become an 'export explorer'.
The DTI wants to see more firms in the North West take part in its trips overseas to establish new trade routes.
The latest Export Explorer programme includes visits to 17 European export markets between April and July.
"The programme is designed to take as much of the pain as possible out of taking those first tentative steps into export markets," said trade minister Brian Wilson.
The programme includes 'hand-holding' visits to tried and tested markets in Western Europe and help and advice on taking part in international trade fairs.
"Whatever business you are in overcome the initial trepidation that has been felt by explorers throughout history and the rewards could be significant."
