REGARDING your Insight report on homeless Michael Herrington (LET, January 4), what a sad, miserable plight this young man appears to be in.
He deserves compassion, certainly not abuse and scorn.
We have sad cases here in our town. I quietly hand over the odd £1 coin to one man in particular, who I know sleeps in a squat. He smiles sadly and walks on by.
Michael Herrington sums it up when he says that "begging is the alternative to stealing." Very true.
Can no one help this man find a place to call home? We call ourselves a caring society. Are we? I wonder.
