SMALL firms in East Lancashire are being urged to act now to prevent potential disaster when the new millennium dawns.
Estimates suggest as many as 20 per cent of small companies may face collapse because of disruption caused by the computer timebomb.
Experts believe the bug could cause switchboard breakdowns and the failure of production systems, payroll software and stock control.
Small firms in East Lancashire can take advantage of free courses to help them get to grips with the problem before it is too late.
"Everyone is well aware of the potential effect that the new millennium could have on computer equipment," said Paul Heald of ELTEC.
"However, many local organisations are under the false impression that the bug can be fought off by buying new IT equipment or waiting for specialist software to come on the market.
"Unfortunately this is not the case."
The Bugbuster initiative offers firms the chance to take advantage of a free short course to find out how the issue may affect them. Further details are available from Mike Wilson on 01254 616278 or by email to action2000@eltec.co.uk
