PROFITS at bookmakers Stanley, which owns two betting shops in Rossendale, have galloped away.
Pre-tax profits surged ahead for the betting group, increasing by 43 per cent to £14.5 million in the half year to November 1, 1998, compared with £10.1 million the year earlier.
Profits from the company's betting shops were up by 52 per cent from £7.7 million to £11.7 million, benefiting from the interest in racing and the football World Cup betting bonanza.
Turnover on bets placed for the World Cup was £4 million, with a margin on sales of 38 per cent.
The company, based in Liverpool, bought 11 new betting shops in the first half of the year, bringing the total to 480, but announced it had abandoned plans to buy the Coral betting shop chain.
