A VILLAGE school is keeping up to date with the news and improving reading and writing skills through our Super Story Search literacy project.
Upper junior pupils at Sabden County Primary School are receiving a daily delivery of our newspaper for three weeks and using our wordbooks to read and record items of news and information.
And to cater for young supporters of both Burnley and Blackburn Rovers, the school has asked for a daily selection of our Clitheroe and Burnley editions.
"This is a particularly good project for a class of mixed ability and ages," said teacher Doreen Whalley. "All the reading matter is topical and there is something for everyone.
"The children even found items of news from our own village as well as issues that particularly interested them, sparking off class discussion on topics ranging from the provision of dental treatment to the care of horses.
"And, of course, the boys are especially enjoying the sports reports."
The class has now been inspired to write their own reports of school activities and to include their own photographs of the events for submission to our NIE columns, so watch this space.
They are also delighted with the free packs of books, given to all schools taking part in the project, which they will review for column.
