BURNLEY: Police are investigating the death of an elderly man whose body was discovered floating in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Burnley.
The body of Michael Joseph Gallagher, 66, of Healey Wood Road, Burnley, was spotted by an angler as he walked along the canal towpath near Finsley Gate, close to the Lambert Howarth shoe factory, at 8.30am yesterday.
The police underwater search unit was called in to recover the body but there was no evidence that Mr Gallagher had been the victim of violence.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and no-one else is being sought by police in connection with the matter.
The incident has been reported to East Lancashire coroner David Smith and an inquest is to be held.
