Oldham Athletic Reserves 1 Burnley Reserves 2
TWO goals in three minutes mid-way through the first half were just enough to give Burnley the win that lifts them out of the Pontins League First Division relegation zone.
Both goals came from perfectly delivered corners from left-back Michael Devenney who first found the head of young defender John Williamson to head powerfully home in the 23rd minute.
Skipper Chris Brass was then denied a rare goal by a finger-tip save from Jamie Campbell but from the resulting corner Kevin Henderson flicked on for Matty Heywood to force his header over the line.
Williamson and Heywood blotted their copybook just two minutes later as they collided and allowed Matthew Tipton a sight of goal.
Oldham's Welsh under-21 international should still have been denied but Frank Kval allowed his skidding 20-yarder to go straight through him.
Burnley recovered to dominate the rest of the first half and Phil Eastwood and Kevin Henderson both went close to adding to their lead.
But the Clarets lost their grip for spells after the break and were fortunate not to concede an equaliser when Mark Ford appeared to handle in the box and Tipton struck a post when left clean through. Burnley: Kval, Pickering, Devenney, Scott, Heywood, Williamson, Maylett, Brass, Henderson (Shandran 83), Ford, Eastwood. Subs not used: Vindheim, Graham, Kelly, Mawson (gk).
