FORMER Lancashire Constabulary driving instructor Adrian Shurmer is set to battle for a place on Hyndburn Council at the local elections in May.
Mr Shurmer has announced his intention to stand against council leader George Slynn in Netherton ward, Great Harwood.
Councillor Slynn retained the seat at the 1995 local elections with a majority of 744.
Mr Shurmer is likely to stand as a prospective Independent or Conservative candidate.
He said: "It is my intention to be a candidate for the Netherton seat, but I have not decided which banner I will stand under."
A spokesman for the Conservative group said candidates would not be selected until next month.
The Tories need 12 out of the 16 seats up for grabs in May to seize control of the council from the ruling Labour group.
