THE continuing blasts of hot air over the future of Clitheroe Civic Hall seem to have produced only one original observation, that from the lady who pointed out (Letters, January 22) that advertising for the Cinema outside Clitheroe is such that she was unaware of its very existence!
Having pointed out this ludicrous deficiency, it is to be hoped that she, and many others, will make a point of patronising the Civic Hall for any films that take their fancy.
Regarding its long-term future, and a building like this must have a future, might I suggest consideration be given to an amalgamation with Clitheroe Royal Grammar School!
Those who recall the Grammar School's wish to sell off part of its Chatburn Road playing fields for housing to fund a sports hall had no quarrel with the idea, I believe - just the means of its achievement.
Since it can safely be assumed that the school still wants a sports hall, might it be worth investigating if the Civic Hall could become the sports hall, or if whatever facilities exist at York Street could be converted to a sports hall and assembly taken at the Civic Hall.
A facility which operates at the times when the Cinema doesn't, both in and out of term times, would seem to offer distinct possibilities for both parties, both financially and geographically, and might even allow Graham Sowter's face-saving 'Arts' alternative to operate.
