REGARDING the red and yellow card system, introduced by FIFA for the guidance of referees, all lovers of football agree that dirty play should be outlawed. But it is eradicating commonsense and discretion.

In normal circumstances, these qualities would be employed but now appear to have deserted many referees.

The verbal caution is fast becoming obsolete and replaced by the over-zealous officials displaying red and yellow cards to achieve quotas.

Constant interruptions by officials create inconsistencies which, in turn, are relayed to opposing players causing friction - hence more cards.

This system, if not applied sensibly, will slowly destroy the spectacle and deprive the paying public.
