A CRACKDOWN on TV licence dodgers netted a total of £6,500 in fines in just one day at a court.

Hyndburn magistrates convicted 24 people and a further 13 admitted watching TV without a licence.

The 37 offenders were also ordered to pay a total of £1,785 costs.

They were warned to buy a licence if they wanted to keep their TV sets, or they could face stiffer penalties.

TV Licensing officers recently launched a month-long campaign to snare licence cheats across East Lancashire.

They will target homes where there is no record of a licence being held.

A spokesman for TV Licensing said: "We catch 1,000 licence dodgers every day. Anyone thinking of watching television without a valid licence will be caught.

"We would much rather people bought a licence in the first place and avoided a court case."
