A CANDLE which has burned since student Paul Wells was taken hostage in 1995 has been extinguished to signify that his family accept he will not be coming home.
A yellow ribbon which has been tied around a tree in the grounds of Immanuel Parish Church, Feniscowles, was also taken down during a church service yesterday, Paul's birthday.
An engraved slate, based on one of Paul's final photographs taken in Kashmir, was presented to the church by his family, including parents Bob and Dianne.
The Rev John Cree said the actions indicated the acceptance of Paul's family that their son will not be returning. Mr Cree said: "Until we know the full truth of what happened to Paul and his companions, there will always remain a faint hope. But the events which took place on Sunday mark a significant change.
"The family want to thank everyone who has supported them with their prayers.
"The events were also an expression of thanks for the prayers and support Paul has received from so many in his community and in many other places."
