AN internal investigation has begun into allegations that police officers in Burnley have been working as taxi drivers.
Supt Bob Thompson of the Lancashire Constabulary Discipline and Complaints unit at Hutton confirmed today that five officers who work at Burnley police station were subject to an internal police investigation concerning their outside business interests as drivers with a taxi company.
The officers have been served with notices outlining details of the investigation but have not yet been interviewed.
It is believed books relating to a taxi business have been seized.
Supt Thompson said he could not comment on the detailed allegations and that the investigation was still at a very early stage.
He said: "A file will be prepared for the Deputy Chief Constable to consider.
"If there are any criminal matters arising from the investigation that will be subject to consideration by the Crown Prosecution Service.
"It is too early to comment yet.''
He added: "No-one has been suspended.
"The investigation is in the early stages.
"It is a matter which was referred to us by the Divisional Commander.
"It is an internal matter and we are trying to move the inquiry along as quickly as possible.''
