A HUNDRED and fifty per cent hike in allowances paid to Burnley councillors was unanimously rejected last night after Independent leader Harry Brooks condemned it as "unreasonable, unmerited and unaffordable".
Coun Brooks said there was simply no justification for implementing an independent commission's findings on payments to local councillors and the present level of around £53,000 should remain as it is for at least another year.
He told the town council he had no objection to the system of payments being changed, but the overall level of expenditure should be contained at its present level.
Majority Labour leader Stuart Caddy said his party was happy to support Coun Brooks' call for no pay rise in the coming year, but added there was a need for all-party talks on the issue and possibly public consultation.
