I WAS delighted to see space given in this week's Citizen to David Bousfield's proposed ultra-light rail transport system linking Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham with potential for extension to Bailrigg (Citizen: February 11).
I was privileged to be present at the public presentation of his proposed scheme at St Martin's last November under the auspices of the Lancaster, Morecambe and District Rail User Group. One could not fail to be impressed by the elegance of what is essentially a simple and down-to-earth scheme. As was pointed out in the article, it makes maximum use of already existent trackbed and could be built section by section, both factors contributing to containing costs to a level which would compare remarkably well with the costs of building a major road bypass.
In my opinion this scheme deserves very serious consideration by the city authorities and by all concerned to see ecologically-sound solutions to transporting people around the district.
Dr F James, Bolton-le-Sands.
