I understand that the city and county councils will borrow between £1-£2 million to supplement the Millennium grant so that the combined cycle and footway over the bridge can be built. This means some five pounds per household for the next 20 years to pay back the loan and interest. This may seem nothing in return for such a splendid edifice (provided cyclists and pedestrians are properly segregated).
What seems odd is that at the same time, when the county issues travelwise pamphlets encouraging our children to walk to school, the mere tens of thousands required to build a footway on a dangerous bend (Hest Bank Lane) - so that children and the elderly can walk safely - cannot be found. But there is always the money to paint roads pink with white bicycles, which has recently happened on Owen Road.
For every cyclist hundreds of people walk, but this never registers with our councillors. How many cycle to council meetings or even use the bus - think of the money it would save on travel allowances?
