FOLLOWING on from the examples set by Councillors Heath and Broad did any any readers notice in last week's Citizen a Lancaster City Councillor acting responsibly and in the interest of public purse?
I refer to your article on page 3 "Airey's Auditor Plea" which reports about Cllr James Airey pressing the District Auditor, Mr Clive Portman to conclude his investigation into the formal objection to the Blobbygate fiasco in which two million pounds of public money was lost without return for the local public.
What the report failed to tell us is the fact that it is us poor rate payers who are paying for the District Auditor's time in investigating the Blobbygate formal objection which was submitted in August 1998.
As ratepayer and in view of the fact that the DA has had the objection in his possession for over six months I welcome Cllr Airey's action, although perhaps ratepayers should bear in mind the question of why this has not been raised sooner by the authority as a whole!
Rather than incurring further expense for ratepayers and asking the DA to prepare an interim report would it not be better to obtain a satisfactory date from him for concluding his investigation?
Based on the prolonging of his investigation I suspect that the DA's report will achieve very little in exposing the truth and it will be left to the ratepayer to decide upon their perception of the truth during the democratic process in May. Cllr Airey, another name to remember when you collect your ballot paper in May?
Mr Jackson,
Hest Bank.
