BUSINESSES in Blackpool South Shore are backing a radio link system designed to beat shoplifters.
Fifteen local businesses have already joined the scheme, which was officially launched at the end of last week (Feb 12).
The radio network will allow participating shops to keep in contact with each other and with local police patrols.
Businesses can use it to report any suspicious behaviour on their premises, to keep track on the movements of known offenders and to call for police assistance in an emergency.
The system is supported by Blackpool Police in association with Blackpool Town Centre Forum, which will operate and maintain the scheme.
Support funding has been provided by Blackpool Challenge Partnership.
Communication on the system is governed by a code of practice drawn up in consultation with the police.
It is hoped that the South Shore scheme will reduce retail crime and ensure that more shoplifters are caught.
A similar system already exists in the centre of Blackpool, with nearly 50 businesses taking part.
Nigel Hanson, Blackpool town centre manager, said: "We have drawn on experience gained from the town centre system, which is extremely successful, and we are very appreciative of the high level support given by the police both at headquarters and at South Shore."
