TRAFFIC chiefs have slammed the brakes on raising car parking charges in Bury.
Short-stay charges for parking both on and off-street will not be increased, thanks to new competition.
The Mill Gate multi-storey car park, free parking currently available at the new Woodfields retail park, and the Trafford Centre with its 10,000 spaces have influenced councillors to freeze some charges.
However, long-stay parking charges will increase by 10p to £2 while contract parking will rise between £10 or £20 to help meet new income targets.
The new charges will come into effect in April.
