THE cycling road season begins in East Lancashire on Sunday with the long-established Clayton Spring Classic being promoted on a course near Clitheroe.
Organiser Bill Belcher of Rossen- dale has received more than 40 entries for this early-season event which will be held over 15 laps of a short circuit between Edisford, Higher Hodder and Mytton for a total of 55 miles.
Top riders Mark Lovatt, Mike Harrison and Tom Barras, who is the son of the famous Syd Barras, are entered and all of them elite category riders with many big wins to their name.
The promoting Clayton Velo Club field a strong team in Paul Anscombe (Trawden), Dave Ferguson (Colne) and Gareth Jones (Whalley) with Dave Ebbrell of Wilpshire riding for Blackburn and District CTC and Ian Barnett of Blackburn riding for the Nelson Wheelers, also in the field.
The starting time is 10am and the finish is near Higher Hodder shortly after noon and any elite, first, second or third category road men can still enter on the day by arriving in good time at the headquarters at the Roefield Leisure Centre, Clitheroe.
