WIGAN Council's ecology officer, Sheena Crombie, has won an Earthwatch Millennium Fellowship which will take her to Indonesia next month to witness the problems of deforestation.
To win the award Sheena had to explain how working alongside scientists in the field would be of use in their professional life and how it could benefit the local community.
On return she will draw up a personal action plan showing how she will organise activities to pass on her experience and new knowledge locally.
Sheena, one of 50 winners nationwide, said: "I am delighted."
The Fellowships are funded almost 90 pc by the Millenium Commission and 10pc by sponsors Royal and Sun Alliance.
