THE Journal's front page story on Councillor John Lea's suggestion to put boundary signs on the six main roads in to town, should in my opinion be supported by all concerned parties.
The suggested layout of the signs is, I think, excellent - showing to all visitors the important part played by Leigh in its efforts, not only on the town itself, but possibly the prosperity on the country as a whole, and while not forgetting the great contributions played by Leigh's brass bands and rugby fraternities.
Indeed, it may even start something nationwide, for in only one place have I seen something similar - that place is the Black Forest area of Germany, where it seems every town, village and hamlet have their pictorial welcoming signs. And, which incidentally have on the reverse side (the side leaving town) the words 'Auf Wiedersehen' - a nice touch.
But one word of caution, John. Again using the Black Forest area as an example, where graffiti, vandalism and litter louts are very rarely seen, beware the spray can artist, the 'Robin Hood' louts etc., etc., who will make a bee-line for the destruction of your idea, unless maybe protected by stout sheets of bus shelter type perspex.
And finally, yes, the signs would remind me of my younger days at Astley Green Colliery as an underground electrician, where I worked with John Lea, who at that time was a very conscientious and willing young electrical apprentice.
Good on yer John, keep up the good work.
