I WRITE regarding the proposed boundary signs for Leigh.

May I respectfully suggest that although I personally think the idea is quite 'nice' and indeed would probably look most effective on roads entering our town, they would be more appropriate if we did receive hundreds of visitors to our town.

Most people using these roads in and out of Leigh are perfectly aware of our heritage, and as I am almost 69 years-old, I feel that within a month or two they would be covered with moustaches, new eyes and other graffiti.

At this point, may I make a suggestion that the £1,500 be put towards something that is much more necessary and ambitious. How about removing the Cenotaph and re-siting it in the region of the green corner of the Parish Church, and the front of the library, having it re-planned so that it is a centre point with seats etc., and possibly remove the obelisk.

This would release good building land that could be used to build properties for the elderly such as the bungalows and flats on the old Stone House area at Etherstone Street.

These would be ideal for retired people who would like to live adjacent to the town centre, shops, churches, pubs and bingo halls.

I am aware that there are people already striving and making good progress in an attempt to get Leigh Parish Church floodlit, which has been desirable for many years.

Perhaps these people, along with our councillors, could work together to do something really worthwhile for our town and the approaching Millennium. It may also help stop people commenting about all the changes in Wigan but not much in Leigh.
