Haydock 74 Hare and Hounds 10 PREMIER Division title hopefuls Haydock proved too strong for their Division Three neighbours in this Hays Chemicals St Helens Cup tie.
The Yickers opened the scoring after 12 minutes when good interpassing saw Boland score under the posts with Darren Anders converting to make it 6-0. Then two tries in four minutes by full-back and former Hounds player Neil Wade, both converted by Anders, put Haydock firmly in control.
Another converted touchdown by Tither stretched the lead to 24 points before Hounds hit back with a well-worked try by second-row Barry Dearden from a neat delayed pass by scrum-half Paul Martin. Prop Stuart Haycock added the goal but on the stroke of half-time Haydock scored again when giant second-row Pearson broke through to score an unconverted try to make the half time score 28-6.
Haydock dominated for most of the second half with Kelsey, Pearson and Wade prominent. They increased their advantage just one minute into the second half when Ireland went through after good work by Kelsey to score a try. Anders converted to make it 34-6.
Hounds replied with a well-taken touchdown by hard-working sercond-row Phil Thompson who pounced on a kick-through to score.
But from then on it was all Haydock with further tries coming from Kelsey and two each from Pearson, Wade and Bloor, plus five goals from Anders and one from Fearnley to complete the scoring.
Outstanding for Haydock were Kelsey, Bloor, Boland and Wade, while the plucky young Hounds outfit were particularly well served by centre Paul Thompson, second-row Phil Thompson, loose-forward Karl Grounds and stand-off Ste Hill.
