EXCITING plans to celebrate Leigh's Charter Centenary have got a star-spangled endorsement.
Georgie Fame, the lad from Cotton Street who shot to the top of the pop charts and is still making world-class music, is coming back to Leigh.
He will appear at Leigh Miners in September as part of the Centenary events.
On a sporting theme, the Centenary organisers are offering trophies to sporting clubs who want to organise a commemmorative event.
Already Leigh and District Anglers have a match planned.
"Anyone who wants trophies for an event to mark the Charter Centenary should get in touch," said Rita Jones from Colliers Photographers of Railway Road , Leigh.
Leigh Centurions play Oldham Bears during the charter celebration week (Sunday, August 8) and it is hoped the team will play for a special trophy. Oldham Borough is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
More events planned during August are: unveiling the restored Spinning Jenny plaque; a Festival of Transport; Charter Ball at Pennington Country Park and Police Band concert.
"We would love to hear from anyone who has ideas for the Charter Celebrations," said Mrs Jones. "Just give me a call or come to our next meeting on March 18 at the Town Hall (7.30pm)."
