CAN you spare a few hours a week to extend the hand of friendship?
The St Helens Coalition of Disabled People is looking for volunteers to join its Befriending Scheme to help physically or mentally handicapped adults.
Their aim to help relieve the loneliness and isolation experienced by people suffering from a physical or mental handicap by offering companionship and support.
Volunteers will also be expected to provide information, offer encouragement and to motivate their new friends to try new experiences.
The scheme has already been operating for six months and anyone interested in volunteering will be asked to undertake a preparation/training course in March, followed up with regular support meetings.
For more information or to take part in the scheme, contact Ann Slatter, St Helens Coalition of Disabled People, SmithKline Beecham Building, Westfield Street, St Helens WA10 1QL, telephone 633379.
