WHAT has Tim Flowers done to Eddie Brandon? (Sports Letters, February 23).

Mr Brandon now blames Flowers for putting the Rovers near the relegation zone in the past few seasons, as well as having the audacity to claim that Alan Fettis is a better goalkeeper.

Perhaps Mr Brandon looks for something else in a goalkeeper than have three previous England managers, several Premiership managers and the majority of Rovers' supporters.

Goalkeeping is a terribly up and down progression - just look at Peter Schmeichel and David Jones.

This is especially so for goalkeepers of John Filan's nature - the cross claimers.

When they're on form, as Filan is currently, they're brilliant, but the time always comes when the crosses and shots don't stick and confidence evaporates.

Goalkeeping is about minimising mistakes and this is why goalkeepers such as David Seaman, Flowers and Nigel Martyn, who stay on their line more, tend to play international football.

Keith Reynolds' criticism (Sports Letters, February 23) of the choice of Chris Sutton as Rovers' captain was slightly unfair.

Surely, the captaincy should go to the best player in the team - one who commands the respect of those around him and who stands up and gets counted when the chips are down.

Chris Sutton fills all the criteria. All Rovers fans can see the red mist descend on Sutton at times, and then he loses his head. But if you take this away from Sutton, then do you take the player away - as appears was the case with Ian Wright?
