REGARDING the remarks by Albert Morris (Letters, February 24) on oestrogen pollution of the environment and its effects on wildlife, this alters the sexual physical appearance, not the sexual preference of, fish and other water creatures that ingest the stray hormone.

A person being gay has absolutely nothing to do with the female hormone, oestrogen. A person's sexual preference or orientation is totally separate to the amounts of male and female hormones in their body.

A mainly heterosexual man given high doses of female hormone would not have his preference for females altered.

It would "feminise" his body, give him "pseudo" breasts, soften his skin, etc, but his preference for heterosexuality and females would remain unchanged.

There is no particular "look" that makes a person homosexual. Many hairy and extremely masculine men are gay. Likewise, many very effeminate men are rampant heterosexuals.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation and benign ignorance about "causes" of gayness. Our sexual preference - our homo or hetero sexuality - is inside our brains at birth and cannot be learned or changed by the actions of others. Sexuality is usually not a choice.
