HARRY Gillespie is screen-testing young hopefuls every week at his snooker masterclass - and next week the star of the show could be cue!

For Harry, junior co-ordinator at the Top Break Snooker Club in Burnley, has struck upon a novel way of getting the message across to his students.

He records every single mistake.

Harry has started up a School of Excellence at the popular Elm Street club every Thursday night, where two players from the youth ranks have an intensive 90-minute training session - all of it captured on film.

"My aim is simply to make them better players than they already are," says Harry. "It's very hard to pick out individual faults because you can't possibly spend time with all 36 junior players when they meet up at the weekend, but it is far easier in a one-to-one scenario.

"We use the video camera to film the sessions, and then refer to it to point out the mistakes that they've made so they can see it for themselves."

Harry, who has been youth co-ordinator for the last three years, also tries to get a local pro on board - usually resident professional Glenn Stevenson.

"We've only been going four weeks so it's early days yet, but I'm keeping a record of their breaks in match play to see if they improve."
