In David Christley's letter about Crinkley Bottom (Citizen: February 11) the author directs a number of accusations against myself and others.
Ever since the settlement with Unique there has been a flow of letters seeking to apportion blame for what happened. David Christley's letter is a little different, because he admits to participating in some of the events concerning Crinkley Bottom. However, he too is seeking to blame others and apparently accepts no responsibility himself.
Back in late 1993 it was the Morecambe tourism section which most strongly advocated the proposed project. This is now more than five years ago and I do not suppose any of us have total recall as to all the details. However, I certainly remember various written memoranda and verbal communications from the tourism service around that time. On October 20 1993, for example, David Christley argued: "this is on opportunity we must not miss" and he urged "that agreement be reached ASAP."
I have no problem with this: David Christley like others involved was doing his job. The prime goal of the Morecambe Tourism Service was to bring more visitors back to the resort. The whole council shared this vision. However this means that, like many other people, David Christley too has to share some responsibility for subsequent events, concerning Crinkley Bottom.
