MAY I ask the Licensed Victuallers Association to justify the increasing practice of charging an extra 5p when you order a half pint instead of a pint. For example, a pint costing £1.60 would be 85p for a half and for two halves £1.70, an increase of 10p.
As it takes less time to serve a half pint the labour costs are lower, it takes less detergent to wash the glass and less storage, so logically if should - if anything - be 5p less! This practice is also most unfair to women who are more likely to drink halves. It also does not encourage drivers to drink less. Licensees are continually complaining about the high level of taxation on alcoholic drinks and yet they add to the high costs for no reason but extra profit.
