A LEIGH voluntary group has scooped a national lottery jackpot.

The Friends of Shopmobility have won a £4,658 grant which will be used to buy three new four-wheeled scooters - for Wigan's new Robin Park Sports complex.

Leigh player Tim Street, will present the cheque to chairman, Garry Kay, next week at the Leigh office.

Vice chairman, Eric Worrall, said: "We are a very small and dedicated group, and this is a feather in our cap. It was our first attempt for a grant from the National Lottery Charities Board."

The Friends, mostly clients themselves, support the parent charity, which has been operating in Leigh for over seven years, providing the free use of powered scooters and electric or manual wheelchairs on a daily basis to people who need them.

The scheme is successfully run from offices in Leigh, Wigan and Robin Park, and outreaches in Atherton, Ashton and Golborne.

There are over 2,500 registered clients, a number growing by in the region of 40 per month.
