Thatto Heath 46 Park Amateurs 4 HEATH put on an impressive display to defeat a big
Halifax side to reach the last 16 of the BARLA BNFL National Cup.
The writing was on the wall for the Yorkshiremen after only three minutes when Heath's impressive full-back, Wayne Jackman, scored a wonderful solo try, beating four defenders to touch-down left of the posts.
This try had followed some fine play that had taken Heath the full length of the field.
From the restart, wingman Mike Woods claimed the ball and set off on one of his defence splitting runs beating three men only to be pulled down by the last line of defence. The ball then went blind to big second row man Darren Blanchfield who sucked in the covering defence before releasing centre Jamie Hill to dive over in the left hand corner.
On nine minutes loose-forward David Lloyd made the half-break and then fed the ball the supporting second row man Jimmy Waterworth, who showed great strength to shrug off the attempts of two defenders to score left of the posts.
Park Amateurs then had the better of the next 10 minutes but Heath's defence was solid.
Mid-way through the half Heath struck again following a drop-out from the Halifax men. Woods gathered the ball and beat the first three defenders with considerable ease. From the play-the-ball Hill set off on a darting run, jinking his way through the first line of defence then beautifully side-stepping the full-back to score under the posts. Jackman kicked his first goal of the afternoon to make the score 18-0.
Two minutes later Lloyd sliced through the Yorkshiremen's defence again to put hardworking prop Phil Southward in the clear to score under the posts. Jackman converted. With 10 minutes of the half left, stand-off Barry Ashall and Blanchfield combined to send scrum-half Chris Rylatt over just right of the posts. Jackman slotted over the conversion.
Five minutes into the second half hooker Nigel Morris went over from the play-the-ball 10 yards out.
Lloyd, again split the defence, three minutes later, and set off down the middle only to be pulled down 10 yards short of the Park try-line. The ball found captain Martin Horton from the play-the-ball who stormed over just left of the posts. Jackman tagged on the two points.
Park Amateurs never gave up but everything that they tried with the ball was thwarted by the solid Heath defence. However their efforts were rewarded in the 16th minute of the second half following a fine passing movement from left to right, their right wing, Kevin Dunne, diving over to score in the corner.
Park continued to put the pressure on but this was relieved by a fine 60 yard kick from Ashall finding touch deep in the Yorkshiremen's 25.
With eleven minutes left, Heath scored the final try of the game with Jackman putting Lloyd through the gap who then left the Park full-back stranded with a fine side-step to stroll under the posts. Jackman completed the scoring with the conversion.
The man of the match, sponsored by Lea Green Fencing, went to Lloyd followed closely by Hill and Horton.
