Simms Cross 8 Haydock 20 HAYDOCK maintained their Premier League title challenge with a great win at Widnes.
They were soon on the attack with strong runs from Pearson, Bloor and Lowe, but Simmies held out. A good break by Lowe saw him send Bloor through only to be called back for a forward pass.
But after 17 minutes Haydock eventually got their reward when good passing along the line saw the ball come out to the wing and Tither went in at the corner to put Haydock 4-0 up.
But after that Simms Cross came into the game more and Haydock seemed to go off the boil. And after 27 minutes a big up and under in very windy conditions was fumbled and Simms Cross powered on the ball to score a try and conversion to put the Widnes side 6-4 in front.
A further penalty to Simms Cross made them 8-4 in front. Haydock seemed their own worst enemy as they kept dropping the ball, but good defence kept the score at 8-4 to Simms Cross at half time.
Haydock now facing the wind, were under pressure until five minutes into the second half Haydock went into the 25 area and Wayne Bloor weaved his way around several players to score a great try under the posts. Ireland converted to put Haydock 10-8 in front.
They never looked back after that and took the game by the scruff of the neck. Simms Cross' discipline was faltering and three penalties to Ireland put Haydock in a commanding lead at 16-8. Strong runs by Pearson, Speed and Lowe were troubling the Widnes side and really bad tackles from the Widnes side, when the referee could not take any more, saw two Simms Cross players dismissed in the last 10 minutes. Haydock completed the scoring two minutes from time when good interpassing saw winger Kay come inside to take the pass and score a good try to give Haydock a deserved victory. Outstanding for Haydock were Bloor, Pearson, Speed and Lowe.
