FOR over 80 minutes it looked like St Helens Star Premier Division outfit The Anchor were going to relinquish their hold on the Liverpool CFA Intermediate Cup.
They were a goal down after 40 minutes against Liverpool side Dog and Gun at Bishop Road but Martin Hynes snatched the equaliser in the 84th minute and just as extra time loomed up, a penalty was awarded and Damien Owen hit home the winning goal.
In the Premiership Rifle defeated a vastly depleted Engine side 8-0. A hat-trick for new boy Steve Renshaw, two for Ian Chisnall and one apiece from Steve Kenny, Paul Smith and Norman Haggerty did the damage. Shoe met their match at Ecclesfield, Peter Chisnall grabbing their goal in a 4-1 reversal by Gerard Arms.
East Sutton Labour (Peter Houghton, Kev Leyland, Ian Roach, Nick Zacharides and Paul Foster) won 5-0 at home to Beeches Reserves.
In Division One, Old Congs' title chances were severely dented as they went down to a season's first win for Haresfinch Social. Goals for the Social came through Paul Cartwright and Graham Halliwell (2). Carborundum, now having a fine revival, upset Clock Face Miners Welfare (Stu Tarbuck) by winning 2-1 while Junction surprised everyone by thumping Sidac Social 5-0 Jacks (2), Shone (2) and Tubbins finding the net.
Hall Street Union creep closer to Sportsmans Athletic in Division Two as they gave Pilkington A a 7-3 drubbing at Ruskin Drive. Dave Kenny, Peter Hall and Barrie Devlin scoring for Pilks and Anthony Rylance (3), John Ogden (2), Brain Langshaw and Steve Doyle getting the Union goals. Although Micky Chisnall scored for a 'never say die' Trees outfit, they went under 1-5 at home to local rivals Earlestown (Griffin). Nutgrove and West Bank battled out a 2-2 draw but Bull and Dog (Birch and Bingley) were humbled 2-5 at home by Eccleston United (Anth Wilson (2), Gary Hughes, Paul Thomas plus o.g.). The Garswood Trophies Hospital Cup semi-final will now take place at Prescot Cables FC on consecutive Wednesdays March 10 and 17, kick off 7.30pm.
In the Combinations Sunday League, Oddfellows and East Sutton Labour battled out a 2-2 deadlock in the Premier Division. Also in the Senior Division Owens Corning went under to the only goal in a thriller against Rose and Crown while Toll Bar were well and truly beaten 0-3 at home by ex Services (Rainhill). RESULTS
