ONE thousand colourful spring crocuses are demonstrating the borough's backing to beat a killer.

Bury is one of nearly 300 councils to plant beds of crocus bulbs in support of the research charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer as part of its annual fund-raising campaign.

The 1,000 bulbs represent the 1,000 women in the UK who die from breast cancer every month.

The campaign is sponsored by Comet which is encouraging its customers to contribute by buying a special crocus lapel badge.

Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "I hope that everyone in Bury will enjoy the extra colour these crocuses will provide this spring and will make their own contribution to the campaign by picking up a crocus pin."
