A CAMPAIGN by local MP David Chaytor to give tall people a better deal has reached the heights of television.
The Bury North MP, who is 6ft 1in tall, was filmed in Parliament this week by Tyne Tees TV along with his assistant Jenny Holland (5ft 11in) and Phil Heinricy, secretary of the Tall Persons' Club of GB and Ireland, who stands a whopping 6ft 8in.
Mr Chaytor has even been interviewed by Australian radio, who told him he was the first politician in the world to have taken up such a cause.
The MP is calling on airlines and railway companies to provide more legroom at no extra cost, like some overseas airlines including Qantas and Air New Zealand.
He is also urging government ministers to adopt new standards for buildings and equipment: these have not changed for many years, even though the population is getting an inch taller in each generation.
Mr Chaytor said: "It's high time for the needs of very tall people to be recognised at home, in the workplace, on public transport and in the shops."
