VICTIMS of crime in Haslingden are being urged to apply for free security measures for their homes - to prevent thousands of pounds in funding having to be returned unused at the end of March.
Operation Shield, backed by funding from Action for Haslingden, provides and installs mortice and window locks and door chains free of charge to householders who have been burgled or are frightened of becoming a victim.
The service is not means tested and is designed to give victims of crime peace of mind as well as deter repeat burglaries.
Patricia Ellins, Rossendale Crime Prevention Officer, said: "People have been slow to come forward to apply for these free security measures.
"There are thousands of pounds still unspent, which will have to be returned by the end of the financial year in March, if they are not used.
"We urge genuine burglary victims in Haslingden to contact us - even if they have already reported the crime - and we will assess whether they are eligible for these free security measures."
A similar scheme for the over-55s, known as Operation Safeguard, has been a great success and has led to Haslingden having one of the lowest repeat burglary rates in the region.
