RIGHT to roam campaigner Gordon Prentice today branded the Government's compromise on access to the countryside "lunacy".
And the Pendle MP urged Prime Minister Tony Blair to think again.
Environment Minister Michael Meacher was today expected to confirm that the Government would not give ramblers and walkers the right to roam over land not under cultivation or of special interest - seen by some as a climbdown on Labour's pre-election promise.
Instead he proposed a network of legally enforcable voluntary access agreements.
But Mr Prentice, who is to press ahead with his Private Member's Bill to give a right to roam, said: "This is lunacy.
"We have had 50 years where landlords could give people access to the countryside but haven't.
"Either I can walk on open countryside or I cannot. There is no third way."
The Government proposal was described by the MP as "immensely complicated".
