A TRIP to Eastbourne became a busman's holiday for a Whitefield-based police officer.
Detective Inspector Jane Antrobus sprang into action when a pensioner was knocked down by a speeding car on the sea front. The officer helped give first aid to the 83-year-old victim, who later died in hospital from extensive injuries.
A 17-year-old youth was later sentenced to 15 months youth custody for driving at more than twice the speed limit.
The head of East Sussex's traffic division wrote to Bury's divisional commander, Chief Superintendent Phil Hollowood, praising DI Antrobus' "excellent conduct".
Inspector Peter Holley said: "Several other witnesses made mention of the way Jane took command of the situation and controlled the scene. My officers were grateful for the actions she took."
DI Antrobus was in charge of the Bury Township police initiative prior to taking up her current post as head of Whitefield CID.
