FINISHING in the top ten on the Malcolm Wilson Rally netted maximum points for Martin Meadows in the BTRDA Gold Star Championship - and propelled the Clitheroe driver into the lead of class A6.

Despite giving away 400cc to his rivals, Martin and co-driver Ian Oakey were in scintillating form in their Proton Compact, despite the tricky nature of the stages.

"The first stage was covered in snow and sheet ice which caused carnage for some of the drivers, but we just got with it!" said Martin.

"We had a real push through Grizedale, and after being on the absolute limit for 12 miles we were just six seconds off reigning ladies champion Barbara Armstrong and British championship contender Stuart Egglestone.

"It was a tremendously encouraging result, and we've taken maximum points."

After the disappointment of a broken wheel which dropped them out of contention on the opening round - with first place virtually assured - Meadows is looking forward to the rest of the season with renewed confidence.

"Obviously I was fed up after the Wydean, but only because we hadn't taken any points there," he explained.

"I knew that we were on the pace there, and this result has confirmed it.

The next round is in Yorkshire, and the stages have plenty of long straights, which make it easier for those drivers with more power than us. But as long as we can get some points and stay in touch, I'll be happy."

Meadows' Proton Compact featured a new colour scheme by Rally Repaints of Selby. The Yorkshire company have joined Ralliart Co-Ordsport, CAFOD, Harry Hockly Motorsport, PIAA and Proflex as sponsors for 1999.
