ONE of the first community recycling schemes in the country to be funded by the proceeds of the landfill tax is under way in Pendle.

A successful bid for £75,000 from the Lancashire Environment Fund will pay for pilot recycling schemes involving 2,000 homes in Earby, Brierfield and Reedley with a view to extending it to cover the whole borough in the future.

The aim of the scheme is to cut waste by encouraging householders to recycle as much waste as possible. Compost bins will be distributed, different coloured plastic sacks will be available for paper and cans, and there will be "bring" sites for glass and textiles.

A bid for Single Regeneration Budget money is being put together to extend the scheme into parts of Nelson or Colne.

The Government has set the council the target of recycling a quarter of all household waste by next year.
