ALONG with the latest rise in council tax in Burnley, I think it should be pointed out that rents and taxes are not the only thing on the up over the past couple of years.
According to press reports I have noted Burnley is alleged to have the highest rates of suicides, infant mortality, chest complaints, dental decay, child abuse and violence, burglaries, (twice the national average) and is one of the most deprived areas in the country.
We have also the highest number of hard drug users and empty council properties and last, but not insignificantly, the lowest rates of pay in the country.
Where does the responsibility lie? Is it with the council or national government?
Either way, things can only get better.
J T NAUGHTON, Deerstone Avenue, Burnley.
